July 12th, 2016 by

RWA 2015 Ballroom
Whether it’s your first time going to RWA Nationals or your tenth, you want to be prepared for what promises to be the best conference of the year. Last week we shared a list of things to do before the conference. Here’s our list of recommendations for making the most of your time in San Diego this week:

During the conference:

  • Pitch. Even if you think you’ll get rejected. Pitching is great experience and you’ll never know unless you try.
  • Exchange business cards with fellow writers.
  • Attend as many workshops as possible. Even Nora Roberts is attending workshops to hone her craft.
  • Network with writers, editors, and agents in the elevators, at book signings, publisher parties, etc. You never know when an agent or editor will ask you to pitch.
  • Collect as many names of readers as possible at the literacy book signing. These are potential reviewers for your future releases.
  • Promote yourself. Take lots of pictures/selfies and post on social media. As much social media as possible – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.

Title: Dear Mr. Weaver

Series: Mail Order Bride Ink #1

Author: Kit Morgan

Genre: Historical Romance

Release Date: April 28, 2016

Publisher: Self Published

Synopsis:

Daniel Weaver was ready for a wife. His three older brothers had been married for several years and now it was his turn. So, like his brothers Arlan, Benjamin and Calvin, he sends for a mail-order bride, with a little help from their cousin Matthew of course. After all, he helped his brothers write their letters to their prospective brides, so why not him? But when the letter from his bride comes, it’s got more than her acceptance of his proposal written in it. Worse, it gets picked up and read by the town’s worst gossip, Nellie Davis.

Ebba Knudson can’t figure out why folks in her intended’s town of Nowhere would be giving her such odd looks. It was bad enough she had other things to deal with by coming to the Washington territory to marry a farmer, but now this? Was there something wrong with her future husband? Or just with her? Of which she knew there was plenty. Enough to make her think she might not get married at all…

Enjoy this sweet, historical, western romance and the first book in this laugh out loud new series!

Making the Most of RWA Nationals 2016

July 6th, 2016 by

RWA 2016With RWA 2016 right around the corner, thousands of romance authors across the country are full of excitement and butterflies. Whether it’s your first time going to RWA Nationals or your tenth, you want to be prepared for what promises to be the best conference of the year. Here are some things to consider before, during, and after San Diego.

Before the conference:

  • Pack business casual – sundresses, skirts, capris, comfortable walking shoes/sandals, cocktail dress and low heels for gala/awards ceremony Saturday night. Be sure to pack a sweater because some of the workshop rooms can be arctic.
  • Pack light – leave extra room in your suitcase for the books and swag you’ll collect and bring home. You can also save your back by shipping books and swag home. Just don’t wait until the last day.
  • Stock your purse with Tylenol or Advil and Bandaids. There’s nothing worse than having a headache and having to pay $5 for only a few pills at the hotel gift shop. Bandaids in your purse will be good for any blisters that may develop from all the walking. Again, wear comfortable shoes.
  • Don’t forget protein bars. With back-to-back workshops and a busy schedule, having protein bars in your purse will save you time and money.
  • Back up your laptop and phone – The last thing you want is to lose your cell phone or laptop. By backing them up before you leave home, your WIP and photos are safe at home. Laptops and cell phones are replaceable but your precious photos and hours of writing are not.
  • Write your pitch and practice pitching with your critique partners and friends.

Next week we will share tips for making the most of the conference while you’re there.

Social Media Tricks to Build Your Following Part 4

June 24th, 2016 by

shutterstock_332766110Part four of our Social Media Tricks for Building Your Following series brings us to the last three strategies. While these three strategies may seem like common sense, they’re also the most unknown.

  1. Calls to Action. You can grab more attention on Facebook, doubling engagement, by simply using words like “share” and “please.” Hashtags, no more than two per post, also help. Seven exclamation points get higher engagement!!!!!!! Did you also know that nine question marks create extremely high engagement too?????????
  2. Share, Like and Retweet. The old adage, “You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours,” also applies. It stands to reason that the more posts/tweets you share and retweet, the more likely your followers are of sharing and retweeting yours. So, share your fellow writers’ posts about their books, the ones you believe in, and when the time comes for your book’s release, they’ll be that much more likely to spread the word about yours.
  3. Know When to Post. According to Facebook marketing expert, Jon Loomer, it’s best to post two to four times a day. Posts made around 1 p.m. get the most shares. Those made at 3 p.m. get the most clicks/views. Posts made between 5 p.m and 1 a.m. get the most engagement.

Healing must start from within…

Desperate to reconnect with her half-brother, Emma Edwards takes her new medical training and secures a doctor’s job at the prison where he’s serving a sentence. But what she finds there is worse than she ever imagined…tough rules and even tougher men, gangs powered by drug money and corruption. Emma must find a way to keep her brother alive until he’s freed even if that means lying to the one man she should be able to trust…

Unless you find someone to share your pain…

Warden Maxim Chambers doesn’t believe a woman should be working in a penitentiary, especially one like Emma – a woman even a hardened man like him can’t get off his mind. He’s spent too many years building walls around his heart to let himself care about anyone. Yet when Emma is almost hurt in a prison assault, Maxim can’t deny his feelings for her. But what is the connection between Emma and the prisoner named Sam?

And accept your past.

When secrets are revealed, danger and death run through the prison. Only the truth can save Emma and Maxim…if it’s not too late.

Song of the Blackbird immerses you in a whole new world – a gritty, violent world where things you have always believed turn out not to be true. It is a compelling story of sorrow and loss, of hope and second chances, and most of all, of the power of love.

Top Ten Social Media Tricks Bestselling Authors Use to Build Their Following Part 3

June 16th, 2016 by

shutterstock_399098170When it comes to building your following as an author it’s essential to know what content to use on social media. This week we’re sharing three more important components every post and tweet should include.

  1. Inspirational. People love to be inspired. Sharing fun, inspirational messages that motivate is a great way to engage followers.
  2. Educational. We’re hard on ourselves as writers, often beating ourselves up when in reality each of us is a wealth of knowledge. Consider sharing some of the writing tips you’ve learned over the years. You’ll help aspiring authors who in turn will share your posts with their followers as well as spread the word about your books.
  3. Pictures. As it turns out, pictures really are worth a thousand words and 53% more impressions (views) than any other type of post. Consider posting pictures and asking your followers, “What’s the one word you’d use to describe this?” There are all sorts of low cost stock-photo sites like Shutterstock.com, Fotolia.com and iStockphoto.com where you can get great images. However, if you’re short on funds, consider free stock-photo sites like: http://www.freephotosbank.com , http://littlevisuals.co/, and http://picography.co/ .

Top Ten Social Media Tricks Bestselling Authors Use to Build Their Following Part 2

June 8th, 2016 by

Woman with Social Media Icons

Last week we shared two of the top ten social media tricks bestselling authors are using to build their following. This week we’re sharing two of the most important components every post and tweet should include.

  1. Entertaining. Think Nirvana’s Teen Spirit, “Here we are now, entertain us.” If you want your posts/tweets to be liked, shared or retweeted, your content must be entertaining. Consider posting one of the many images from Someecards.com. They’re a great way to provide your followers with a humorous post that’s more likely to be liked, shared and retweeted. You can also find new and interesting material on websites like https://www.buzzfeed.com/trending, https://www.google.com/trends/hottrends, and https://news.yahoo.com/blogs/trending-now/.
  2. Engaging. While it’s tempting to focus on the number of likes, shares and retweets we get, how we interact with those who like our posts is just as important. This is best done by showing your followers you are genuinely concerned about them and what they need. As a matter of fact, when done right, engagement can boost your likes, shares and retweets. Consider posting famous quotes, keeping your posts brief (80 characters or less), and posting on Sundays (receive the most engagement). From there, be your authentic self and reply to as many comments as possible with positive thoughts.
